For many years, River Nile cruises have been taking visitors on a magical journey back in time along this magnificent river. A combination of exploring the wonders of historical Egypt combined with a mellow journey south from Luxor to Aswan is ever popular with holiday makers.
A regular Nile cruise lasts seven nights and operate Monday to Monday. Direct flights from Great Britain bring tourists to Luxor and then they are transported to their cruise vessel to check in. The following morning, the journey into age-old Egypt starts with a take a look at to the East Bank of the Nile at Luxor like the Temples of Karnak and Luxor.
The following morning, the sightseeing heads over to the West Bank of the Nile and the Valley of the Kings prior to going back to the boat for lunch. Following lunch, the cruise boat leaves Luxor travelling south for Edfu. After an overnight mooring at Edfu, there are further excursions to temples at both Edfu and Kom Ombo before sailing on to Aswan.
The next day, it is time to take a look at Aswan and a more up-to-date construction; the Aswan High Dam. Built in the 1950s, the Aswan High Dam produced Lake Nasser, itself a cruise holiday location. After lunch, there is time to sail on a traditional Egyptian Felucca along this very scenic part of the river. The Cataract Hotel in Aswan looks out onto the Nile and it is the place where Agatha Christie wrote part of her popular book, “Death on the Nile”.
Soon after an overnight stay in Aswan, there is some time available to explore the town or on the other hand, there is an optional tour to the superb Temple of Abu Simbel at the southern end of Lake Nasser. It is a long way to Abu Simbel, either 45 minutes by air or three hours but it is worthwhile the time and effort.
Aswan represents the turn-around point for Nile cruises and now the boat heads back north the 80 miles to Luxor. The journey takes two days with an overnight stop at Edfu before heading back to Luxor. The week sailing along the River Nile is over and tourists return to the airport and home.
